Description

The Asha 305 and Asha 311 models are known as the first generation of Asha Full Touch phones; the second generation is the Asha 50 x line. Asha is the new name of Nokia's entry level phone lineup. The Asha 303, which we recently reviewed, succeeds the Nokia C3. The Asha 300 in turn is an obvious descendant of the C3-01. Interestingly, while the QWERTY-enabled Asha 303 upgrades its predecessor in almost every way, the Asha 300 looks and feels like a downgrade. That should make it even more affordable, but let's see what you get relative to what you pay for. Bluetooth profiles: SIM Access Profile (SAP), Serial Port profile (SPP), Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) 1.0, General *Audio/Video Distribution Profile (GAVDP), Service Discovery Application Profile (SDAP), Phone Book Access Profile (PBAP) 1.1 The Nokia Asha 300 takes its design cues from both the C3-01 and the C5..The 300’s curvaceous lower end and the all-plastic build reminds us of the C2-01 too. We hate to say it, but the Asha 300 is nowhere near the solid elegance of the C3-01. The simplicity of its design and the compact size are its biggest assets. The oversized screen (compared to the keypad), makes interacting with the touch interface reasonably easy.

The 2.4" resistive TFT touchscreen is a tad smaller than the 303’s, but has the same QVGA resolution. At ~167 ppi the 300 has a slightly better pixel density of the two, but like its older brother, the image quality is nothing to get excited about. All devices up to the Asha 50 x series run the Nokia domestic operating system with Series 40 UI platform, also known as S40. The Asha 501 (released in May 2013), Asha 500, Asha 502, Asha 503 and Asha 230 (announced on 14 February 2014) are powered by the Nokia Asha platform, which builds on S40 and Smarterphone. The left side of the Asha 300 features a lanyard eyelet as well as a small crevice for pulling the battery cover open (which we’ll get to in a bit).At 112.8 x 49.5 x 12.7 mm, the Asha 300 is significantly lighter and more compact than the QWERTY-enabled Asha 303. In fact, at 85g, it weighs considerably less than the steel-clad Nokia C3-01. Microsoft buys Nokia's Devices and Services Unit, unites Windows Phone 8 and its hardware maker". The Nokia Asha 300 may not exactly fit in with today’s standards of newsworthy. With smartphones flexing their muscles at venues like CES, sporting ever-expanding app markets, HD screens and multi-core processors, it’s hard to see how an entry-level offering could produce much of a splash. It also keeps the weight down. The compromise is that we can’t help but feel that the final design is not quite as eye-catching as the C3-01. In terms of size, this is a small and compact handset. Built around a 2.4-inch screen it weighs just 85g and sits neatly in the palm of the hand. Screen reflectiveness is another major detriment, and makes viewing the screen difficult outdoors despite the above-average brightness. Display testThe touchscreen display uses resistive panel technology, so you need to give it a fair push to get the best out of it. However, as it doesn’t support a virtual keypad, for example, you only use the touchscreen for accessing apps and files, so this doesn’t greatly affect usability.
